Blog movingday

For quite some time I have wanted to move my blog from my compadre.dk domain.

Getting the new domain (soerenbredlundcaspersen.dk) was quite easy, and I did that long time ago, but getting around the technical stuff took a bit more time. Setting up a new blog was no problem with WordPress. What took me some time (but now that I know how to do it shouldn’t have taken more that a few minutes) was moving all the old posts over through the wordpress export and import tools and setting up a redirect from the old blog.

So, hopefully I have now managed to transfer all the content from the old domain, set up a redirect that catches all old posts. Additionally I have changed the theme of the blog, from the very brightly coloured Greenery theme to the more low key Titan Theme. Hopefully this change won’t represent a general change from less colour full content on the blog, but I felt now might be as good a time as any to make a change.

On a more technical note, although the redirects should take care of any issues, feel free to update any links and change rss feeds from pointing to http://compadre.dk/blog/ to http://soerenbredlundcaspersen.dk/. All underlying link structure should have been moved along – but if you do notice dead links or other odd behaviour, feel free to let me know.

In case you wonder, this is actually the second time the blog is moving. First time was when I moved from Livejournal to a wordpress install on my own domain.

English… og dansk

To help readers who might only understad English (or Danish) I have now added two categories to this blog.

Read all posts in English here, (rss feed)
and read all posts in Danish here (rss feed).

(Some posts where both languages are used will be categorized as belonging to both categories.)

Læs alle blog-indlæg på dansk her, (rss feed)

That’s a good thing?

I just saw a video by IBMs A Smarter Planet Blog about some of the things we can expect from cities of the future. The intelligent water system that detects leaks seems neat, but I’m not fond of the use of mathematics and software to prevent diseases from spreading. It seems very easy to use this data and knowledge to quarantine (or worse) people, maybe even before they are infected.

Also, the crime prevention system seems to make it possible to turn thought crime illegal, and making it possible to convict people for crimes they may commit in the future. Sounds like Minority Report, just with statistical analysis instead of mutants able of precognition.

wpToGo

That was easy and painless…

I just upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.8. As a reader, you properly won’t even notice, but as a publisher it seems I will now have smoother access to themes and widgets. See this video for all the goodness.

The upgrade was more easy than ever. I just clicked twice in the web interface, and it was done.

2.8

How easy is that?!? Great work from WordPress!

How to mirror your blog onto Freenet

I received an email a few days ago asking how I manage to mirror this blog onto Freenet.

For those of you out there who don’t know about Freenet, it is a computer program that aims to provide anonymity for consumers and providers of information, in an effort to secure free speech. The network is decentralized and uses strong encryption to secure anonymity and free speech.

I have been using Freenet, and following its development, on and off over the last couple of years, both because I generally like the idea of free speech and also because I find the technical aspects interesting. The Freenet program is still under heavy development, far from a 1.0 release, and always in need of support. Since I’m not much of a coder I can’t really help The Freenet Project that way, so instead I try to provide something else – content. In other words, I mirror this blog onto Freenet (where a blog is often called a flog).

It is actually quite simple (although a bit time consuming) to insert content into Freenet. Assuming my Freenet node is running, here is what I do:

  1. First I fetch the files locally, using HTTrack (apt install) (I guess wget, puf or similar would work just as well…)
  2. Then I use jSite, to insert onto Freenet.

Quite simple really… If you feel like getting your blog (or other content) on Freenet, I say go for it. If you run into any problems, feel free to contact me.

PS. I’m always looking for friends to connect my Freenet node to, so if you feel like you know and trust me, and that I might now and trust you, feel free to get in touch.

PPS. You can find this blog on Freenet at this key:
