This weekend was an event full one here in Copenhagen. Sunday afternoon a “reclaim the streets” party/demonstration in support of Ungdomshuset (Wikipedia link) ended in 263 arrests, and the media has been full of pictures of flying paving stones and dumpsters set on fire in the streets of Nørrebro.
The police of course claims that the demonstraters could have continued if they had played by the rules. The demonstraters on the other hand claim that the confrontation started by the police driving(!) their vans into the crowd.
At the end of the day, out of the 263 arrests only five people remained in custody.
My guess is that the police was just looking to pick a fight… The day before, Saturday, there was another big peace full demonstration, which I took part in, for Ungdomshuset with about 3,000 demonstrators and it was made clear again and again that all the happenings for Ungdomshuset this weekend (there was also a concert with some rather big names Friday) were to be peace full. The phrase “we choose when and where to fight” came up a couple of times and it was made clear that no one were looking for trouble this weekend…
Besides that, I personally had a great weekend, with some partying and moderate drinking Friday and Saturday night, and a relaxed bike ride with David Sunday afternoon out to Langelinie and up the coast with no particular place to go. We actually just managed to see the big police lineup at Droning Louises Bro before we left the city center.

Well, at least it works now…
Yesterday morning (or what ever the time was around the time I woke up) I tried logging on to my web-bank. Not that I had any bank business like bills to pay, just to see if there was still money left in my account.
Instead of the usual log on screen I was greeted by a page explaining that the data center my bank is using has got a new security certificate, that needed to be accepted.
So far so good, I clicked to log on, got the dialog to accept the new certificate, accepted, and then the trouble started. The applet to choose my key, input user name etc. was not what meet my eyes.
So, after fiddling around a bit to see if it was a error on my end, I called the support hotline. After a short wait, I got through to some fellow and explained to him my problem. His response was that I was not the first person to report that problem today. So, that indicated that it was indeed not a problem on my end. His advice was for me to downgrade my java to 1.4.2. However when asked, he said that he would not directly pass on my problem to anyone ‘above him’. Maybe I just misunderstood him, but that seemed odd to me.
Anyway, although downgrading java on my Ubuntu Linux is not that hard, I decided to wait a bit and hope that someone somewhere would fix the problem. Later in the evening it all worked again…
I can only guess what happened and what was changed.
Hidden political messages in Aqua lyrics?
Last Sunday (the Sunday that resulted in quite a hangover for me Saturday) Rasmus and I, while under heavy influence of alcohol, started analyzing old Aqua lyrics.
Mostly one would associate Aqua and their lyrics with shallow bubblegum pop, but in the middle of the My Oh My tune, you hear René Dif‘s vocal singing:
Gotta steal from the rich when they don’t know I’m comin’
Gotta give to the poor, no time for lovin’
If that is not old fashioned socialist propaganda, I don’t know what is… Who would have thought that about Aqua – not me, that’s for sure…
I know it’s kind of cheap just making a blog entry made up of a few links, but I kind of like this story.
It would seem that some British fellow calling him self Banksy has managed to place a doll dressed as a Guantanamo Bay prisoner in Disneyland in Anaheim California.

So, what have I learned over the past weekend?
I guess the most important lesson learned is that if you do not wish to wake up with a splitting hangover you should not drink white wine, rum, red whine and beer (in that order). I hope I’m right when I say that I will never drink like that again!

I really should get myself a new digital camera. The one I have needs to have its batteries changed more often than a baby needs to have diapers changed, and the picture quality leaves (considering what cameras are available currently) much to be desired.
Anyway, I have put up a few pictures from the trip me and my father was on this summer. Only pictures from Holland, no decent ones were taken on the rest of the trip unfortunately. Click the picture to see the rest of them.

So much for being a serious student…
About a week ago I finally got my hands on Sid Meier’s Civ IV for mac. I have played all the previous Civ games, and enjoyed every one of them, so I have been looking forward to the fourth one for some time.
And I can see already that this one is also going to consume quite a lot of my time. There are a few things about the game play that annoy me, but not nearly enough for me to not play the game. One being that you have a lot of information, but it is far from easy to access when you are actually expected to make decisions. But I guess that will become less of a problem when I get to familiarize myself with the units, the tech tree and so forth. Also even with the latest patch I’m still seeing things that can only be graphics and sound bugs or faulty hardware on my end.
