Five free StarCraft II Beta invites

As you may know I have been so lucky as to be included in the beta testing of the coming StarCraft II game. Blizzard has now begun distributing invites through the people already in the Beta. So, long story short, I now have five invites to hand out. Sure, I could let them go to friends, but I just feel like there should be some reward to the regular readers of this blog.

It is going to work on a first come, first serve basis, so feel free to click the links to the invites below, but pleas only help your self to one invite, lave some for the next person.

If you are lucky enough to get one of the invites on this the first day of April, feel free to get in touch in game, so we can do a little 1 vs. 1 – but be warned, I play a mean protoss. And although the game is in some aspects very similar to the old StarCraft (and BroodWar expansion) a lot of new units are available, so you may need to spend the first few games just getting used to all the new features of your favourite real time strategy game.

Enjoy!

Order now to guarantee delivery by Christmas!

Newest Alien film

Yesterday I went to see the latest Alien film. Like the others it feature Sigourney Weaver as a woman, who, just like was the case in the first Alien film, has been employed by a heartless corporation, which sends men and women into the far reaches of space, exposing them to extreme dangers, with only one motivation: Profit!

Very early in the film it is made clear that conflict with the aliens already populating the planet, called Pandora, is inevitable. All the time I must admit that I was hoping for some of the humans to act responsibly and just say:

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

That should have wiped out the alien menace once and for all – but of course, just like all the other Alien films, the people in charge make all the wrong decisions. However the lack of nukes being launched does make for a much more entertaining film.

The film, and in particular the special effects used to produce the landscape and the aliens, is stunning. There is a high pace throughout and although it lasts over 2 and a half hours, the film never gets boring.

Definitely worth seeing.

Climate Lecture

Yesterday I attended a climate lecture by Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri. The lecture was organised by the University of Copenhagen (where I am a student), and was well visited.

Dr. Pachauri has the chair at the IPCC,a and as such received the Nobel Peace Prize (shared with Al Gore) in 2007.

During the talk Dr. Pachauri presented both the ICPP, the research done by the panel, some of the general changes already observed in the weather here on earth and some specific events from the last couple of years. He was however very careful to emphasize that no single event could be used as a proof of climate changes.

Then the talk continued with a review of the possible future scenarios, depending on how much of a reduction (if any) in green house gasses the world manages. Especially with emphasis on the parts of the world where the largest numbers of people would be affected, and some words about what that would mean to the rest of the world.

Rising sea levels is one of the most often mentioned possible effects, but water stress and famine are also likely effects of global warming. This could again result in millions of climate refugees and failed states.

Finally Dr. Pachauri went on to talk about solutions, and the fact that the cost of reducing green house gasses would not actually be very high, and could result in quite a few new jobs.

After the talk there was a short moderated debate with the audience. There were a few people in the audience, who were very critical of Dr. Pachauri and his message. I don’t necessarily agree with them, but I did think it was to bad they weren’t given more microphone time. It is always more fun to hear people debate than agree. (Some other speakers just praised Dr. Pachauri, which may be admirable, but as such wasn’t very interesting.)

Among the critiques were Christopher Monckton, a British lord, with the most fantastic British accent. I would love to be able to talk like that!

Although he has no real scientific background, the good lord did raise a valid question about one of the graphs used in Dr. Pachauris presentation. However I hope and think that the graph was included as a means to illustrate the point, not as part of the underlying scientific argument. One would expect that the work of the IPCC is a bit more detailed than what can be presented in an one hour presentation.

So, at the end of the day it was clear to me, (not that it really wasn’t before) that we need action, and quite soon. Will the cop15 be able to deliver a (good enough) agreement? Right now, my guess is no, but the leaders of the world are welcome to prove me wrong…

Men udskrivning? – come on!

Må man lige have lov at være her, uden at blive smidt ud? Tak!

Ubuntu Live! in Århus

Yesterday the Danish LoCo team had a successful day in Århus. Århus is the second largest city in the country, and home to the biggest shopping mall here in Denmark, called Bruuns Galleri.

Armed with our good spirits, laptops, CDs and flyers for handout, we managed to talk to a lot of people, and hand out a lot of CDs and info flyers.

Especially the Eee Top touch screen with edubuntu installed was a hit with the kids. And when parents saw their kids doing basic arithmetic training while playing games, they were very easy to start a conversation with.

In general it was not hard to start conversations with people, and after mentioning the price and the general lack of viruses, most people were very interested. My rough guestimate is that we managed to hand a CD and a flyers with more info to 100 people and that we managed to talk to quite a few more.

This is definitely a thing that we can do again, and it doesn’t have to be linked to a release. Any weekend will do, and I really hope that we can manage events like this one again soon. Now that we know what is required, it should be fairly easy to plan and run events like this anywhere in the country. All we need is an agreement with a local mall (or similar), CDs, flyers and 6-8 people (with computers). This may be done with the help of a local LUG or similar, if need be.

After talking with ‘ordinary’ (what ever ordinary is) people about Ubuntu yesterday, my feeling is that People and Ubuntu are ready to be introduced, and we just need to go out there and do it!

As an added bonus, we actually had help with the CD handout all the way from Romania yesterday. Manuel from ubuntu-ru.org came down to help out. Of course he didn’t come all the way from Romania just to join us, he is an exchange student living in Århus, but still, I thought it was very brave of him to show up (and I hope the birthday party he was attending later turned out great).

Kim took a lot more pictures and Carsten also has pictures (and a description of the day, in Danish).

After the event a few of us went to the local PROSA office, where we were allowed to borrow their canteen and have some pizza. We also shared opinions about what we wanted to do about the next Ubuntu Live! – Ubuntu Release party here in Denmark. The next one, 10.04 is a LTS, and as such really invites for a grand celebration. We haven’t make any final decisions, but if only half of the ideas we talked about yesterday get carried out, it is going to be Big!

Vand på månen? Ja!

Her fortsætter historiefortællingen om ubuntu-dk. Første del kan læses her og forrige del kan læses her.

Podcast

Community Day 2009
